Catalogue design made easy

Catalogue Design blog hero
Using database publishing software can speed up production and improve accuracy of your catalogue design project.

One of the biggest challenges of producing documents like catalogues, or price lists, is the management of the content. Once a design has been created and agreed upon, there comes the task of populating the design with the content. Product names, descriptions, part codes, prices. Often that information can be missing, incomplete, or subject to change.

Using a database publishing solution like EasyCatalogue linked to the InDesign publishing software makes that task much simpler. In basic terms the content for the document is created on a spreadsheet and linked to the artwork. When content is added, or changed on the spreadsheet, it’s a simple task to update that information in the artwork, no more copy and pasting of content. The database of content can be either on-line or off-line, and in a number of formats.

By using templates within InDesign, importing and styling the data is a simple process. InDesign’s powerful character and paragraph styles allows easy formatting of the content of your documents.

Using an on-line data source such as a Google Docs spreadsheet has many advantages over an off-line source. Using a shared document for the content allows for multiple users to add or edit the content, rather than using an off-line document which would be complex to manage and track changes. It is also possible to work from multiple data sources, so a mix of on-line and off-line documents can be used to populate the artwork.
